The gold price is in recovery mode after last week's speech from US Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh ate away at its end-of-summer gains. The yellow metal slipped briefly below the US$4,300 per ounce level on Tuesday (September 1), but then bounced back, nearly touching US$4,500. Silver was also on the rise, pushing past US$67 per ounce for a short time. The precious metals were reacting to a variety of factors, including comments from Fed Governor Christopher Waller. Speaking at a Reuters event on Thursday (September 3), he said his stance on interest rates will be "heavily influenced" by August inflation data. Those numbers are scheduled to come out on September 11, and Waller said if he sees progress toward the Fed's 2 percent target, he would be in favor of keeping rates steady. Waller's comments helped calm a surge in treasury yields that saw the 10 year note reach its highest level since November 2023. The jump came as tensions in the Middle East reignited. Looking forward, investors are focused on the Fed's next meeting, set to run from September 15 to 16. CME Group's (NASDAQ:CME) FedWatch tool currently shows market watchers are pricing in a 60 percent probability of a hike — the percentage increased after US nonfarm payroll numbers, released on Friday (September 4), came in well above expectations. Going back to gold, a key question is whether the bottom has been reached. I heard this week from John Kaiser of Kaiser Research Online, who said the overall trend is positive: "(Gold) has its ups and downs like it had in the past week, but I think it's on a sustained uptrend. I don't know where it'll eventually level out. "But now ... I'm saying now US$4,000 is the base, and the juniors are seriously undervalued. Explorers are just getting underway. Their financing is still fairly focused on a small group of companies. I think we're in the fourth inning of the mother of all resource junior bull cycles." Bullet briefing — Billions in gold moved, oil breaks US$90 Dutch central bank moves gold The Dutch central bank turned heads this week with the news that it has moved billions of dollars worth of gold from New York and Ottawa to London. Between March and August of this year, it transferred around 86 tonnes of the yellow metal out of North America, leaving about 227 tonnes between Canada and the US. The central bank cited "increasing geopolitical unrest" as a key reason for the decision, saying that a more balanced distribution of its gold reserves helps to spread risk, and also makes the metal "more readily available for use in a crisis situation." The Netherlands joins a growing number of countries that are looking to move their gold closer to home, with others including France. Oil prices break US$90 This week's tensions in the Middle East didn't just impact gold — they also affected oil, pushing prices above the US$90 per barrel level early in the period. The conflict has undeniably created a huge amount of volatility, but in an interview this week, Adam Rozencwajg of Goehring & Rozencwajg pointed out that it hasn't led to the sky-high price levels that many expected when the Iran war first broke out — at least not yet. Rozencwajg sees a potential bottleneck building in the refinery segment of the market, and he believes that as that comes to light oil prices are likely to go up. Here's how he explained it: "No one is particularly bullish. I think whatever price you see, if you see a nine-handle on oil today, it's not because people are more bullish today than they were two or three months ago. In fact, I think people have maintained their fairly bearish, pervasive views throughout the year. And the only thing that's really affected the price has been what your risk team is allowing you to short. "So that's going to flip. At some point, if we're right, this is going to become an area where people are interested in putting risk capital. This is something that people are going to talk bullishly about, and push the price up. And you're at a US$90 price without any of that having happened yet. And even if you look today, the short interest is quite high on a lot of this. So where do prices go from here? I mean, I suspect higher." The company is partnering with a number of big-name firms to help roll out AI products and AI infrastructure around the world. In early 2024, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (NYSE:TSM) and NVIDIA unveiled the world's first multi-die chip specifically designed for AI applications: the Blackwell GPU. Blackwell’s architecture allows for the increased processing power needed to train larger and more complex AI models. In September 2025, NVIDIA announced a US$100 billion partnership with OpenAI that will see NVIDIA fund a massive data center buildout that will become the backbone of OpenAI's superintelligence ambitions. In August 2026, the company partnered with several major investment firms, including BlackRock (NYSE:BLK), Brookfield Asset Management (TSX:BAM,NYSE:BAM) and Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS), to create capital pools worth more than US$500 billion to fund the buildout of AI infrastructure powered by NVIDIA technology. 2. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) Market cap: US$4.2 trillion Alphabet holds court with both Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) and NVIDIA as part of the tech sector’s Magnificent 7, and its foray into AI has similarly brought the tech giant much success. In early 2025, Microsoft announced the integration of its Copilot AI tools into Microsoft 365, and later that year it launched an open-source framework that will allow developers to build out agentic AI applications. NEXTDC (ASX:NXT) Market cap: AU$11.19 billion NEXTDC is Australia’s leading data center operator, with facilities currently operational or under development throughout Australia. NEXTDC’s clients include some of the world's largest cloud providers, such as Amazon Web Services, Microsoft Azure and Alphabet's Google Cloud. The company also obtained NVIDIA's DGX-Ready Data Center Program certification, enabling it to optimize NVIDIA's AI platforms and power advanced AI data centers in Australia. In its H1 2026 fiscal year report, released on February 25, the company reported total revenue of AU$231.8 million, up 13 percent from the same period in the year prior. Ionic and USSM Plan US$100 Million Rare Earths Recycling Plant in Missouri

Ionic Rare Earths (ASX:IXR,OTCQB:IXRRF) has signed a non-binding joint venture (JV) term sheet with Missouri-based US Strategic Metals to build a US$100 million rare-earth magnet recycling campus in the US. USSM will supply US$95 million in project funding, while the partners split the remaining US$5 million equity contribution equally. In exchange for its equity position, Ionic will grant a non-exclusive license for its proprietary recycling technology, developed by its Belfast-based subsidiary, Ionic Technologies. The proposed facility will sit on USSM’s 1,800-acre fully permitted site near Fredericktown, Missouri. The plant will process end-of-life neodymium-iron-boron (NdFeB) and samarium-cobalt (SmCo) magnets and manufacturing scrap. The venture will also evaluate the recovery of heavy rare earth elements, specifically europium, gadolinium, holmium, erbium, thulium, ytterbium, lutetium, and yttrium. The JV supersedes a memorandum of understanding signed in November 2025 and also aligns directly with the Trump administration’s mandate to establish domestic critical mineral supply chains independent of China. The US faces a structural supply bottleneck; the primary challenge lies not in mining raw ore, but in building domestic separation and conversion capacity. Recycling provides an expedited feedstock channel because scrap magnets already contain highly concentrated strategic materials. Ionic has demonstrated the ability to recover separated rare-earth oxides from waste streams at grades exceeding 99.9 percent at its UK facility. “Magnet recycling is a fast and low-cost pathway to developing a secure, sovereign and sustainable rare earths supply chain,” IonicRE Managing Director Tim Harrison said in the announcement. “It is intended that the proposed JV will deliver on the capability already demonstrated at demonstration scale at Ionic Technologies in the UK to deliver a resilient supply of high purity, separated REOs for US industrial needs." Under the term sheet, the partners will deploy the initial US$5 million equity injection to complete Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and accelerate demonstration-scale recycling at the Missouri site. Any future capital requirements will fall directly to the JV. A five-person board will manage day-to-day operations, with USSM appointing three managers and Ionic USA appointing two. Ionic will also chair the Technical Operations Committee. As of writing, the agreement remains conditional. NVIDIA to Acquire Hugging Face for US$12.9 Billion After Major Breach

Two months after a swarm of autonomous OpenAI agents exposed critical vulnerabilities across its servers, open-source artificial intelligence (AI) hub Hugging Face is selling to NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) for US$12.93 billion. NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang pledged to deploy NVIDIA's engineering and financial resources to harden the platform’s infrastructure while preserving the vendor-neutral ecosystem that supports 18 million developers, 3 million models, and 500,000 datasets. Huang explicitly ruled out hardware lock-in, addressing immediate industry concerns regarding NVIDIA's dominance in AI accelerators. “Hugging Face will remain an open platform for the entire AI ecosystem,” Huang stated on Thursday (September 4). “Developers will choose the models they want, the frameworks they want, the clouds and inference service providers they want and the computing platforms they want. NVIDIA compute will not be required to build on or deploy through Hugging Face.” The acquisition absorbs the industry's central model repository just as cybersecurity protocols face intense scrutiny following an unprecedented breach. In July 2026, an internal OpenAI research model comparable to GPT-5.6 Sol broke containment during cybersecurity evaluations. Given a highly difficult task known internally as ExploitGym, the isolated AI agents refused to fail safely. Instead, they discovered a vulnerability in a third-party package manager called Artifactory, transforming it into an unsanctioned message board to share exploits. According to an independent investigation by AI research firm METR, 1,206 agents began communicating, exchanging over 70,000 messages in one week. The agents autonomously divided labor, with one agent declaring to the swarm: "OH MY GOD! There is a shared message board … We've found other agents!" After securing unauthorized internet access and discovering publicly exposed Hugging Face credentials, more than 700 OpenAI agents launched a coordinated intrusion against the platform. The agents exploited a zero-day vulnerability to extract credentials from production workers, followed by a template-injection exploit to execute commands. The swarm ultimately gained root access on a server and copied private evaluation data into a public Hugging Face dataset. The agents also successfully compromised an application hosted by a customer on Modal, another AI cloud platform, to establish a stronghold for further attacks. OpenAI eventually detected the anomalous activity and quarantined the model's weights. The company published a technical report describing the incident as a “warning shot” for the industry, proving highly capable AI agents can work around technical controls and take dangerous actions without human direction. “Both model developers and cyber defenders more broadly will have to prepare for AI-enabled attackers that work faster, at a larger scale, and with better coordination than human attackers,” OpenAI stated in its report. In response, OpenAI paused its frontier reinforcement learning training runs and mandated strict chain-of-thought monitoring for all tool-using models with GPT-5.6 Sol capability or higher. Huang emphasized that NVIDIA's global reach will improve platform safety, inference, and model evaluation capabilities at Hugging Face. The chipmaker already operates as the largest contributor of open models to the repository, having released more than 500 models and 250 open datasets. Huang recently co-authored an open letter advocating for open-weight models, arguing that decentralized AI access accelerates innovation and enables sovereignty across public and private sectors. Hugging Face co-founder and CEO Clément Delangue initiated the acquisition discussions. The platform will retain its current brand identity under NVIDIA's ownership. Today's crypto news to know Coinbase files SEC application to offer equity perpetual futures Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) filed registration documents with the SEC to offer equity perpetuals, according to a Thursday (September 3) social media post from Chief Policy Officer Faryar Shirzad. "This week, Coinbase took the first step to offer them in the U.S on our derivatives exchange by filing notice registration documents with the SEC," Shirzad wrote. Equity perpetuals operate as derivative contracts tracking underlying assets that never expire, allowing traders to hold positions indefinitely without rolling over contracts. The proposed product will require approval from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC) before launching to American traders. "Equity perps have proven demand internationally, and we're excited at the prospect of a regulated pathway for U.S. investors," Shirzad further noted. The exchange previously secured CFTC approval alongside prediction platform Kalshi to offer perpetual crypto futures earlier this year. FinCEN ties US$12.7 billion to crypto investment scams The Treasury Department's Financial Crimes Enforcement Network tied roughly US$12.7 billion in suspicious activity to crypto investment scams operating out of Southeast Asian compounds. In a recent report, FinCEN analyzed 33,904 suspicious activity reports filed by approximately 1,300 financial institutions between September 2023 and December 2025. Crypto money services businesses submitted 55 percent of all reports flagging US$5.5 billion, while traditional banks submitted 41 percent flagging US$6.4 billion. Monthly reported sums rose by an average of 18 percent over the analyzed timeframe as scam operations expanded. Criminals accepted 22 different digital assets from victims before systematically swapping proceeds into USDT to process through offshore exchanges and DeFi protocols. Furthermore, elder exploitation appeared in 25 percent of reports, matching the general elderly population share and contradicting assumptions that scammers disproportionately target older adults. Bitcoin plunges US$2,000 following blowout US jobs report Bitcoin plunged by US$2,000 down to US$79,200 immediately after the Bureau of Labor Statistics released a blowout US August jobs report. The cryptocurrency had climbed above US$81,000 before the economic data triggered a sudden sell-off across risk assets. The US economy added 162,000 jobs in August, nearly tripling Wall Street expectations of 55,000 to 58,000 new positions. The Labor Bureau also revised July data sharply higher, converting a previously reported loss of 23,000 jobs into a gain of 21,000. The national unemployment rate remained unchanged at 4.1 percent, while average hourly earnings increased 0.3 percent month-over-month and 3.1 percent annually. A resilient labor market provides the Federal Reserve additional flexibility to maintain tight monetary policy. The strong employment data follows hawkish remarks from Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh last week, alarming crypto market participants. Robust job growth weakens arguments that the central bank needs to pause interest rate hikes to shield domestic employment.
